Urdu is a language spoken and also written in northwestern and central southern of pakistan, the eastern half of Afghanistan, and some adjacent areas in northeastern india. Urdu is one of the official languages of Pakistan having been designated as such on March 23, 1949. Its literary form can be traced back to the Mughal era when it was used by senior bureaucrats in North India. Some books on Urdu literature were compiled during that era; others emerged during the British colonial era when Urdu literature began to gain mainstream popularity. It became an obligatory subject for school curriculum starting from 1988 onwards.

Urdu is an official language of Pakistan. Hence the books on Urdu literature published in Pakistan are also available in India, and vice versa.
